Just a little somethin-somethin from our buddy Lionel.
Ohgoddd where do I even begin to talk about these dresses. Daaaash, you just STOP IT with dem legs.
I designed, patterned, shopped fabric for, and built all these dresses, including some of the undergarments such as petticoats, a hoopskirt, and a bustle cage. It was 10 solid months of work, and I loved the whole process and am so proud of these gowns, but mostly I am so happy to have been able to do this group at all. These girls are so wonderful, every single one of them <3
The process of building all six MLP gala dresses took about a year to plan and bring together. I believe we all agreed to put a go on Operation Best Night Ever about a month after Dragoncon 2011, where we had debuted our original My Little Pony group. Gala dresses were the obvious next step. I asked the girls if they would let me design and make the outfits, knowing that I was going to both love and regret it later. But mostly love. All my love.
During the design process, which took place between October and December of 2011, I spent a lot of time considering all the different elements. It was important to me to stay as true as possible to gowns as designed through the television program, and yet somehow make them translate gracefully into human interpretations. The real challenge was ensuring that the gowns would also be both flattering and comfortable for each girl.
Some designs were easier to convert than others. Sometimes I found that what I illustrated wasn’t going to translate well onto a body (either because of what it would do to the silhouette, or because it looked too cartoonish), and I had to adjust accordingly.
We wore these gowns at Dragoncon 2012, on Friday evening, and on Sunday for the masquerade, where we won Best in Show - Master's Division.
*****Update***** I am in the process of uploading individual collages of the dresses that include the original concept straight from the show, my design/interpretation of the dress, a photo of the actual dress, and my thoughts about its conception and production. I hope everyone enjoys these as much as I enjoyed working on them!
I had to create an account just so I could tell you all how AH-MAZING you all look and how super cool it is that you guys did this and you're all so beautiful! You did such a wonderful job with the costumes. You are all So lovely!
That is some SERIOUS dedication to making those, and you have my utter respect for sticking to it for the admirably amazing end result. The gowns are also very well 'translated' from their pony origins - different in that they don't look too weird or cartoony on human frame, but also instantly recognizable.
(This also very much screams that you guys did have a lot of fun with this, which is also always good.)
Awww yeah, epic comment. We really had a lot of fun with this project and I'm so happy we did it. I'm not sure I could survive it a second time through though, so I'm glad it came out so well on the first go!
